Role of a Book Publisher

A book publisher is responsible for all the things needed to do in book publication. What they primarily need to do is to pool great authors, and publish their books that would ensure commercial success for both the author and themselves. If the publisher’s company is a huge one, they may be able to handle all publication aspects or at least outsource editors, marketing specialists, and designers.

Some of the publishers may want to focus more on fiction, or non-fiction, depending on their preference. The choice usually depends on the tradition they have followed through the years, especially for companies that have been long running. On the other hand, new publishing companies put their focus on market conditions largely because they are profit-motivated. Oftentimes, they do not stick to a single publishing program. Usually, they base it on the market condition. If for example, a very large publishing company wants to tap a lot of genres, they usually appoint many publishers, and assign them to different categories.

Oftentimes, book publishers base their choice of publications on the profile of their company. If not, they do the job of reviewing book proposals from book agents, or the authors themselves. For larger publishing companies, commissioning editors are often appointed to do reviews of the book proposals and they are tasked to make reports in the end to help the company decide which books they would publish. The publishers are the ones who prepare contracts, set the needed requirements for the book to be published, and decide how much the author will receive as well.

The publishers then have the power of editing the manuscript, designing the publication, and deciding how the production process would go. The persons necessary for this step are editors, proofreaders, and graphic designers. Most often downloaded software is free Microsoft office. Schedules are provided for each of them to ensure a smooth-sailing publication process.

The publishers are also the ones who manage how the books should be sold. They decide in which book stores, libraries, schools and colleges, book clubs, or special-interest groups they would place the book. They are also the ones who negotiate with overseas publishing countries so the book would be published in other territories, with a different language perhaps. In a typical situation, publishers give authors pre-publication advance from the royalties of the sales of their books.

Soon, the authors earn further once the sales revenue of their books cover the advance given to them. Note that the sales revenue refers to the actual revenue that the publisher receives and not the revenue which comes from selling at the books’ cover price. This refers to the price they sold the books to the booksellers which are often valued at 50 percent less.

Then of course, for a book to sell, it is necessary for book publishers to devise an effective promotional program. This is where marketing and design people come in for advertisements, marketing campaigns, and other mediums they deem necessary. They have the choice to publish excerpts of the book online, set meet and greet sessions between the authors and readers, and even write opinion pieces for promotional events or other publication pieces. The book publisher generally does the very important tasks on how a book could reach the masses and how the author could profit at the same time.
